It took a month for Hawk to feel completely comfortable in his new home. The memories of his past still haunted him at night, bringing with them the fear of being abandoned again.
Hawk had constant nightmares. In his dreams, he was falling from a high mountain or a cloud, trapped by his own worries. He knew he needed to overcome this fear. Inspired by the airplanes he often saw in the sky—though he didn’t understand what they were—he thought, If birds can fly, why can’t I?
“They’re so tiny, so fragile, and yet they fly!” he thought. “I’m stronger! I could fly too. I just wish I had wings.”
He also admired how birds were never afraid of falling and how they could reach the clouds. Hawk believed that if he could fly, he could escape his nightmares.
Determined, Hawk began practicing. Every day, he climbed onto his owner’s bed and jumped back to the floor. After two weeks of training, he felt he was getting better at “flying.” Slowly, his fears of abandonment began to fade.
Did he learn to fly, you may ask? Well, dear reader, in his imagination, he did. And that was all he needed to set himself free.
The day came when his owners decided to move. Caramelo had found a new family to call his own, while Hawk stayed with his current owners. The couple was moving to a new country. They packed a few suitcases—and a cat.
Hawk was happy. The once forsaken, hurt kitten was now about to get a passport. He realized his owners were taking him far away, but he knew he was going with them.
Instead of a cold dirtbag, he had a cozy place with a soft mattress just for him. He had grown used to car rides and even enjoyed them. But after a short drive, they arrived at an unfamiliar place. Hawk’s heart raced with fear.
For the first time in his life, he saw a huge “gavião” up close. It loomed in front of him, and he was being carried toward it. Hawk wanted to run, but he was safe inside his comfortable cage. “What’s happening? I thought these humans loved me”, he thought.
His owners stayed close, reassuring him. What Hawk didn’t realize was that this “bird” wasn’t a threat. He was at an airport. He was about to hold the key to fulfilling his dreams. Surrounded by the sights and sounds of airplanes soaring overhead, he would finally be free beyond his own imagination.
It was a rainy day. Hawk used to dislike rain and thunder, but as the airplane climbed into the sky, he was filled with awe. He had never seen anything like it. He was flying.
Still, his mind wandered. “What if this flying bird can’t survive the storm? Shouldn’t I be ready to fly on my own? Could my humans fly if needed?" - he worried.
But everything changed when they rose above the clouds. The sky was clear and blue, and the storm was left far below. Hawk looked out and saw a colorful rainbow stretching across the horizon. To his amazement, the rainbow wasn’t just in his imagination—it was real.
At that moment, Hawk understood that fears could be conquered and hawks could be defeated. He knew that beyond any fear, there was hope and a bright future. All he needed to do was learn how to fly—and have the courage to soar high, beyond the storms and above the clouds. He was free.
