Hawk and Caramelo were finally together. Safe in the arms of their new owners, the kittens basked in the sunlight. As they gazed up at the blue sky, their imaginations soared, filling them with the peace only dreamers know.
Sometimes, we are too afraid to dream of a better future. But for Hawk and Caramelo, that moment, awe overtook fear.
For a moment, all our furry friends wanted was to survive. Guided by instinct, they had abandoned hope for something more. It happens to Humans, too. We can feel trapped in survival mode, losing sight of the possibility of brighter days.
But the sun shone softly through scattered clouds, its warmth gentle and reassuring. A cool breeze caressed their fur and whispered in their ears. Hawk closed his eyes and let his thoughts drift. He imagined himself as light as a cloud, carried effortlessly by the wind to a place of hope and serenity.
But memories of the past still clung to him like shadows. His mind wandered back to the menacing "gaviões," the hawks that once hunted him in the bush. Could he ever fly as high as they did? He wasn’t sure he’d ever want to try. The weight of those dark days held him back, trying to ground his imagination.
Suddenly, a deafening roar split the silence, startling Hawk from his thoughts. His eyes darted to the sky, where a massive shadow soared above him. At first, it looked like a "gavião”, but as it climbed higher and higher, Hawk realized something was different. it was flying high, much higher than the hawks he had seen in the bush while he was lost.
That wasn’t a bird. It was enormous, far bigger than any "gavião" that had ever crossed his path. Its size seemed small only because of how far away it was. It took a few days, but Hawk eventually understood it was not a bird. Their new home was near an airport (and, of course, Hawk did not know what an airport was). And whatever that flying thing was, Hawk couldn’t tell, but he knew it was not a bird.
Sometimes, our dreams feel distant, far away from us. We convince ourselves they don’t matter, that they will not make a difference—that they are small. We tell ourselves, for whatever reason, that our dreams are not worth pursuing. But just like an airplane in the sky, our dreams remain huge, powerful, and awe-inspiring to those watching from afar—those who see them land on the other side of the sea, on distant shores.
When Hawk and Caramelo were lost in the woods, all they could think was survival. It was hard to dream big dreams in the middle of a storm. But now, things were different. Hawk was dreaming again.
He wanted to be there, soaring through the sky. He wanted to fly—not as prey fleeing from danger, but as a strong and joyful creature. He longed for a life beyond the shadows of his past, where he could grow into the happy, courageous cat he was meant to be.
