Where to go on Christmas day (or any other day) when you can't go anywhere?
These are tough times for travelers. Restrictions are almost everywhere, and many people can't travel as they used to. What can we do for Christmas (or any other time of the year) if we feel we need to leave our houses and enjoy some new atmosphere?
This article belongs to our special series of articles for Freedom. Stay tuned for more!
Let's start with a few principles. They will help us to figure out the best place to travel.
Go Where You are Welcome
Check the places you would like to visit. What are they requiring? Are you comfortable with it? If not, choose somewhere else. Hold on to what you believe. If you don't feel something is right, don't go there.
Focus on Your Motives
For example, you planned to buy a ticket to Bora Bora, but all the restrictions placed there are driving you crazy. Why not change the flight to the Maldives? You can reach the same outcome - a time on a sunny beach paradise - keeping your mind free and peaceful. What do you wish for in your trip? What are the options to accomplish that? Think about it and consider other alternatives when needed.
Not Welcome at a Specific Place? Leave!
Did you arrive at a restaurant or store and felt unwelcome at that place? Choose somewhere else to go. Just dust off your feet and leave.
If something makes you uncomfortable (at any time), evaluate your options. Always keep your peace and comfort as a priority when deciding.
Be Aware
It goes without saying we should not take our peace for granted. Know what to expect wherever you are. Research the official website of the place you plan to visit from time to time. Everything can change quickly.
What is it that you expect? What are people expecting from you there? Evaluate your possible limitations once you get there. Are you willing to accept whatever is happening? Make sure how the situation where you are going is. Research about the government, people, and whatever you find important. A few clues can be enough to help you to know what to expect. Being aware of whatever is happening at your possible destination enables you to perceive your plan's chances to succeed.
Choose Love Over Fear
Fear is a terrible and powerful weapon. Fear turns you into a slave and, because of it, you end up trying to imprison other people into the same bubble. A fearful person does not reason. Whatever you believe, you will never be happy if you are conquered by fear. It does not matter if you are at home or inside the Burj Al-Arab in Dubai. Love is the best medicine against fear because there is no fear in love. Just the opposite; true love drives out fear. Focus on whatever is good wherever you are.
Okay. We have our principles. Following them will help us choose our dreamy Christmas (or any day) destination. But what if you don't want to fly away and still need some time off? We've got you covered!
Get Lost Wherever You Live
The point is: What is nearby? Are you surrounded by mountains? Perhaps a lake, a lovely sight? A good idea would be to check the map and find places to explore. There is, undoubtedly, a spot you haven't been to yet. You can even leave the map behind and choose a different track around your home to get lost. Wherever you live, what is that you have never or barely noticed? Pay attention to what is close to you.
Do What You Have Never Done at Places You Have Already Been
There is a cafe nearby, and you always stop there on the way back from work to grab a cappuccino. What if you stayed there longer for a few hours to read, draw, or do whatever pleases your heart? Try that for a week.
Perhaps you always go to the park to exercise. What if you took a camera and went there to focus on taking beautiful pictures of people/ nature to your new scrapbook instead? Perhaps you can ask your friends or partner to start a dancing marathon in the park, try a new sport or a hula hoop. The possibilities are endless. You can create a different activity at the park every day until Christmas.
Where in The World Would You Be if You Could Be Anywhere? And Why?
Find Out Your Motives and Make a Plan.
You wish you could be in Greece because you love the scenery and greek food? If you can not be there, try to have a greek week (or month) instead. Research greek restaurants, or perhaps try cooking greek food with friends. Bring Greece closer to your heart. Has there any view similar to the ones you would get in Greece? Go there! If not, fill your home with everything Greece. Youtube is full of videos of beautiful sceneries from all around the world. Whatever you do, make sure you can connect with your real motives.
Research the Nearby Cities
There is always a place to discover: a city, a village, a spot in nature, a store, etc. Even if you have already been to all the cities covered by 50km around your home, you can still find something unique in each one of them. And if you haven't been to one of these nearby cities, a simple walk there can be enough to fulfill a desire for traveling.
Create Your Own Advent Calendar
What if you put all these tips into action? You can create an advent calendar and try these and other ideas every day until Christmas. Moreover: People to see, a Culinary to try, Places to go, Hobbies to enjoy. The list goes on and on.
Find a Place Where You Can All Be Together
So you want to be with your family, but the restrictions are holding you down? This tip is for you! Sometimes, it does not matter where we are as long as we have those we love with us.
Some people do not have their families in the same place. However, there are countries with few or no restrictions at all. Why not meet your loved one in one of these countries? You can be with those you love while you satisfy your wanderlust.
For example, Poland is an excellent place to go if you live in Europe (and it's a beautiful country). Besides, the Polish złoty makes it very affordable for anyone using the euro as the main currency. If you live in Europe, you can enter Poland with just a negative test result. That is something anyone can do.
Restrictions also vary from state to state in the United States. Do your research. Some states are more flexible than others. This matters a lot depending on what you want to do together. Moreover, it may be cheaper if you decide to rent a big house for everyone if being with family and relatives matters the most for you all this Christmas.
Keep an eye on recent changes, make sure you are all safe, and enjoy Christmas with those you love!
Do whatever is necessary to be safe. Take all precautions to avoid issues. But, above all, whatever you do and wherever you go, keep your heart and your mind safe. Allow tranquility to lie supreme in your mind. Your mind does not belong to tyrants. Outside your mind, they may try to devour each other and exercise their iniquities. However, deep inside your heart and mind, if you learn how to master it, their dominion ceases, their influence fades; and their power vanishes.*
You alone are responsible for your independence, and you can be free.
And remember: It does not matter where you are; you can be anywhere inside your heart.
